PASIG CITY, 23 May 2024 – Following their success in the 2024 National Science and Technology Fair (NSTF), four Filipino learners received awards at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Los Angeles, California, from May 11 to 17.

Michaela Ria C. Rentuza, Mikaella Rose Emereene D. Macabata, and Wesly N. Secuya of Cebu City National Science High School secured the fourth grand award in the Cellular and Molecular Biology Category.

The team received a cash award of $500 for their study entitled “In vitro and in silico Evaluation of Embryogenesis Inhibition Activity of Ethanolic Extracts of Chico (Manilkara zapota) Bark Against Gastrointestinal Strongyle Eggs.”

Meanwhile, Arnon Yzabel G. Guinto of Tarlac National High School was recognized by the National Geographic Society with an Excellence in Geography and Geospatial Science Award for her study on “Flood Mitigation of Tarlac City Through 3D Simulation of Groundwater Discharge to Flood Inundation Using Rainfall Prediction and Integration of Spatio-Temporal GIS in Hydrodynamic Models.”

Eight other Filipino learners took part in the annual research event after qualifying through the Department of Education’s NSTF held last April 1-5 in Parañaque City.

Other Regeneron ISEF participants include Josiah Christopher Q. Cruz of Quezon City Science High School, and Christian Paul B. Palacio and Karl Gian S. Abellana of Mandaue City Science High School.

In the team category, Frances Gabrielle S. Bingcang, Hart Gabrielle T. Ong, and Jessica Loreen L. Yabut of Angeles City Science High School and Rose Feth F. Catadman, and Andrei Miguel F. Reformina of the City of Bogo Senior High School presented their research in the international stage.

This year’s Regeneron ISEF featured over 1,600 young researchers representing 64 countries across the world. Recognized as the largest pre-college science competition globally, Regeneron ISEF serves as a crucial platform for young scientists to showcase their talents on a global stage, cultivating a culture of excellence and innovation.
