Malasakit sa mga Pilipinong magsasaka ang naging pangunahing motibasyon ng learner-researchers mula Cebu City National Science High School sa kanilang research study na nagwagi kamakailan sa Regeneron International Science and Technology Fair (ISEF) 2024 sa Los Angeles, California.

Nasungkit nina Mikaella Rose Emereene D. Macabata, Michaela Ria C. Rentuza at Wesley N. Secuya ang ika-apat na parangal sa kategoryang Cellular and Molecular Biology dahil sa pag-aaral nila sa In vitro and In silico Embryogenesis Inhibition Activity of Ethanolic Extracts of Chico (Manilkara zapota) Bark Against Gastrointestinal Strongyle Eggs.

Ayon kay Michaela, sa kanilang pagbisita sa mga agrifarm, natuklasan nila na karaniwang dumaranas ang mga livestock ng mga parasitic na impeksiyon na nagdudulot ng anemia at growth issues sa mga ito na siya naming nagreresulta sa pagkalugi ng mga magsasaka.

Naging resistant ang mga parasitong ito dahil sa mali at labis na paggamit ng commercial anthelmintic medications, at hindi naman kayang bayaran ng ibang magsasaka ang mas mahal na treatment para rito.

“Our research aims to address this issue by finding alternative and plant-based anthelmintics to combat resistant parasites. We hope that our research leads to the development of novel anthelmintic treatments for livestock animals which greatly benefits the food security and livelihood of many Filipinos,” ani Michaela.

Maliban sa kanilang panalo, pinahahalagahan din ng tatlo ang pagkakataon na matuto mula sa ibang learner-researchers at experts na dumalo sa ISEF at National Science and Technology Fair (NSTF) 2024 ng Kagawaran ng Edukasyon (DepEd).

Para kay Mikaella, “interacting with people from diverse backgrounds broadened our perspectives and offered insightful knowledge about a range of scientific domains. Experts who volunteered their knowledge and advice on important subjects gave us an extensive amount of information.”

Magsisilbing mentors ang tatlo sa susunod na pangkat ng learner-researchers sa kanilang paaralan at higit sa lahat, inspirasyon sa learners na nagnanais na i-pursue ang isang career sa Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

“My message to the youth is that your passion for STEM is the spark that will illuminate the future of our nation. Your journey in STEM is not just a career path but a noble pursuit that holds the promise of progress and transformation for the Philippines,” ani Wesley.
